The Best Locations for Family & Couple Photos on the Gold Coast

One of the most common questions I get asked when a client books a session is: "Where do you recommend?"

And honestly? It's one of my favourite questions — because the Gold Coast and Northern NSW border region is absolutely spoiled for choice. Whether you're after a soft, sandy beach, a dramatic headland, lush green parkland, or something completely unique like a pine forest, there is a location here that will make your images sing.

After 15+ years behind the lens, these are the spots I return to again and again — and I will share with you why.

1. Tallebudgera Creek Beach

If I had to pick one location that does it all, it would be Tallebudgera Creek Beach. The combination of calm creek water, sand, large rocks, and lush green vegetation in the background gives you so many different looks within the one location — which is perfect for families who want variety in their gallery.

The light here at golden hour is something special. The rocks add texture and depth, and the sheltered nature of the creek means it's rarely too windy, which makes it a dream for portraits. It's also incredibly family-friendly — kids love playing in the shallow water while we shoot, which means natural, relaxed smiles rather than forced poses.

Best for: Families, young children, couples

Best time: Late afternoon, one hour before sunset

2. Currumbin Alley Beach

Currumbin Alley is one of those locations that looks incredible in photos no matter what. The iconic rock formation in the background, the wide stretch of sand, and the crystal-clear water make every image feel like it belongs in a magazine.

This spot works beautifully for larger family groups because there's so much space to work with — you can walk along the shoreline, play in the sand, and still get that stunning rock backdrop. The natural light bouncing off the water gives everyone a gorgeous warm glow.

Best for: Families of all sizes, couples, extended family groups

Best time: Golden hour — the light hits the rocks and water perfectly

3. Miami Pine Forest & North Burleigh Beach

This is one of my most unique Gold Coast locations and clients are always blown away by it. The Miami Pine Forest is unlike anything else on the Coast — towering pine trees create a cathedral-like canopy that gives a completely different aesthetic to your typical beach session. The dappled light filtering through the trees creates a moody, romantic feel that is absolutely stunning for couples and families alike.

The best part? North Burleigh Beach is just a short drive down the road, so we can seamlessly combine two completely different looks in one session — forest and beach, all in the same afternoon.

Best for: Couples, families wanting something unique, anyone who loves variety

Best time: Mid to late afternoon when the light filters through the trees beautifully

4. The Spit, Southport

The Spit is one of the Gold Coast's most versatile locations. You have large boulders perfect for posing, golden sand dunes with long grass that catches the afternoon light, and sweeping ocean views — all within walking distance of each other.

I love bringing families here because the sand dunes in particular photograph beautifully — there's something about that warm, golden grass swaying in the breeze that feels timeless. It's also a wonderful spot for couples, with the dunes creating an intimate, private feel even though you're out in the open.

Best for: Couples, families, teenage children, extended families

Best time: Late afternoon for the golden dune light

5. Currumbin Valley

For families who want something away from the beach entirely, Currumbin Valley is magical. Lush green parkland, towering fig trees, open grassy fields, and a beautiful tree-lined path make this one of the most versatile locations I shoot at.

The greenery here is incredibly photogenic and gives images a completely different feel — fresh, organic, and timeless. Kids absolutely love running down near the creek which means genuine laughter and movement in every frame. If you're after something a little different from the typical Gold Coast beach session, this is it.

Best for: Families with young children, anyone wanting a green/nature look, couples

Best time: Late afternoon when the light is soft and golden across the fields

6. Rainbow Bay Beach

Tucked at the southern end of the Gold Coast in Coolangatta, Rainbow Bay is one of the most beautiful and underrated beach locations I shoot at. The combination of large rocks, golden sand, and the bay's gentle curve creates a stunning natural frame for portraits.

What I love most about Rainbow Bay is the rocks — they give couples and families something to interact with, lean against, and explore, which leads to incredibly natural images. The light here at sunset is some of the best on the entire Coast.

Best for: Couples, families, engagement sessions

Best time: Sunset — the golden light on the rocks is breathtaking

7. Fingal Headland, Northern NSW

Just across the border into Northern NSW, Fingal Headland is one of the most spectacular locations I travel to. The iconic white lighthouse, dramatic headland views, golden pandanus trees, and sweeping ocean vistas make this feel like a completely different world.

Sessions here have a cinematic, almost editorial quality — the golden grass, the lighthouse in the background, the last light of the day. It's a longer drive for northern Gold Coast families but absolutely worth it for those after something truly stunning and a little bit different.

Best for: Couples, families wanting something dramatic and unique, anniversary sessions Best time: The hour before sunset — the light here is extraordinary

8. Cabarita Beach, Northern NSW

Another beautiful Northern NSW option, Cabarita is a stunning beach with a relaxed, unhurried feel. The beach is wide and uncrowded, the sand is soft, and the large rocks at the southern end of the beach create a gorgeous natural backdrop.

Cabarita has a timeless, classic beach feel that never dates — it's the kind of location where the images could have been taken yesterday or ten years ago, which is exactly what you want from portraits that are meant to last a lifetime.

Best for: Families, couples, anyone wanting a beautiful classic beach feel

Best time: Late afternoon golden hour
